Sometimes you just have to laugh. I was driving down the road one day, steeped in misery, boiling in my pain and loss, I was thinking about the lyrics to a wonderfully miserable song, “Not a Day Goes By.” I was thinking about posting them on my Facebook page as a note to explain how I was and am feeling about the demise of my second marriage to one of my best friends. Here are the lyrics:

Not a day goes by
Not a single day,
But you’re somewhere a part of my life
And it looks like you’ll stay…

As the days go by,
I keep thinking When does it end?
Where’s the day I’ll have started forgetting?
But I just go on thinking and sweating and cursing and crying
and turning and reaching and waking and dying…

And Oh
Not a day goes by
not a blessed day
but you’re still somehow part of my life
and you won’t go away.

So there’s hell to pay
and until I die
I’ll die day after day after day after day
after day after day after day.

So there’s hell to pay
and until I die
I’ll die day after day after day after day
after day after day after day
Til the days go by
Til the days go by
Til the days go by.

Til the days go by.

I turned on the CD in my stereo because I couldn’t stand to listen to my own thoughts anymore. I knew one of my homemade Broadway CDs was in the stereo, and I thought maybe the song I was thinking of would come on.

Sometimes Fate has a good smack upside the head prepared for you, and there’s just no ducking. The song that came on when I hit the power button…?

I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair,
I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair,
I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair
And send him on his way.
Get the picture?

I’m gonna wave that man right outta my arms,
I’m gonna wave that man right outta my arms,
I’m gonna wave that man right outta my arms,
And send him on his way.

Don’t try to patch it up,
Tear it up, tear it up
Wash him out, dry him out,
Push him out, fly him out.
Cancel him and let him go
yay sister!

I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair,
I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair,
I’m gonna wash that man right outta my hair,
And send him on his way.

If the man don’t understand you,
If you fly on separate beams,
waste no time, make a change.
Ride that man right off your range!
Rub him out of the role call,
and drum him out of your dreams…

Oho!

If you laugh at different comics,
if you root for different teams,
waste no time, weep no more.
Show him what the door is for
Rub him out of the role call,
And drum him out of your dreams!

oho, oho

I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
And sent him on his way,

I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
I went and washed that man right outta my hair,
And sent HIM…ON…HIS…WAY!!

I took the hint and spend the rest of the day smiling wryly every time I thought of myself wallowing in sadness and getting the very clear message from Fate and my stereo: Quit Stinkin’ Thinkin’ and move forward, girl! It’s a waste of time and brain cells!
